| When an application, or the client, calls for a firmware design, this is what it may finish looking like. A single custom programmed microprocessor here does the function of so many standard off-the-shelf components that without it the board would have to be about you 20x bigger (and also costlier). While reduced cost is usually the main driving force behind a firmware design, increased reliability and flexibility (future modifications are very simple!) are also big players - not to mention, that some designs just can't be done without a microprocessor. Because this board had to fit into an existing machine, it had to be the same size as the board it was replacing (otherwise it would have been made much smaller than this). |
